Finca Bernina is a family-run 460-hectare farm, located on the foothills of the highest mountain peak in Costa Rica: Chirripo.
Bernina is a diversified farm dedicating 80 hectares to shade-grown coffee, 100 to cattle, 50 to sugar cane and 230 to forestry. Bernina is owned and operated by the Homberger family, a three generation coffee-farming family. The Homberger family dedicated a small portion of their farm to growing the delicate Gesha varietal.
The Gesha varietal was first identified in the forest of Ethiopia in the 1930's and was brought to Central America in 1953.
Interest in Gesha resurfaced in the specialty coffee scene in the early 2000’s in the Taste of Panama competition where it stunned judges.
Although it has relatively low productivity and requires a considerable amount of maintenance, Gesha is considered an intensely flavorful and very complex coffee varietal.
